Caitlin Clark’s superstar Indiana Fever teammate quits team in surprise announcement just weeks into WNBA season

Clark has been struggling mightily of late

CAITLIN Clark’s teammate on the Indiana Fever is now a past teammate after reportedly expressing a desire to leave the team.

The Indiana Fever veteran’s decision comes just a little over a month into the 2025 WNBA season.

Indiana did beat the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night, but the team has been inconsistent.

The Fever are currently 7-7 and recently haven’t gotten stellar play from Clark, who scored just six points on Tuesday and has posted less than 20 points in three straight games.

But Indiana has also been dealing with a headache regarding veteran DeWanna Bonner, who reportedly was frustrated with her role on the team and wanted a trade, per Front Office Sports on Tuesday.

It was reported by Chloe Peterson of the IndyStarSports that the Fever waived Bonner and re-signed Aari McDonald.

The report added that Indiana couldn’t find a trade option and ultimately decided to release the 37-year-old Bonner.

She had signed with the Fever in February on a one-year deal.

The move seemed to make sense as the two-time WNBA champion would be paired with the 2024 Rookie of the Year Clark.

Bonner started the first three games but was benched in favor of Lexi Hull.

Then, Indiana revealed that issues off the court had ruled her out of the starting lineup.

Bonner then made six appearances on the bench.

FOS reported that the fit between the Fever and Bonner was “off” and that she expected to be a starter.

The outlet added that Bonner preferred a trade to either the Atlanta Dream or the Phoenix Mercury, where she won both of her two WNBA titles.

The Mercury is also where her fiancee Alyssa Thomas plays.

Fever coach Stephanie White didn’t share much about Bonner’s situation on Tuesday, saying, “I haven’t had a lot of conversations with her recently, really focused on the team we have right here.”

Bonner is now a free agent and will be available for the rest of the 12 WNBA teams.

Indiana will hope to build off their Tuesday win after losing the previous two games.

They will host the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night.

The Fever are currently seventh in the WNBA standings.
