Massive 7.5-magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert — Chilean Coast On High Alert

7.5-Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Concerns in Chile and Antarctica

A significant 7.5-magnitude earthquake occurred off the southern coast of Argentina early this morning, prompting tsunami alerts throughout southern Chile and certain regions of Antarctica.

The earthquake was registered approximately 200 km south of Puerto Williams at a depth of 10 km, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. At least four aftershocks were recorded subsequently.

Officials warned that tsunami waves reaching heights of up to 9 feet could impact Chile’s Magallanes Region, while Antarctica may experience waves of up to 3 feet.

Evacuations commenced along the southern coastline of Chile, with videos capturing residents and vehicles departing from towns such as Punta Arenas. Authorities highlighted the necessity of including pets in evacuation strategies.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who hails from the region, urged citizens to adhere to official directives, asserting: “All state resources are available.”

The Magallanes Region, being the southernmost part of Chile, has a low population density but is at risk due to its closeness to the earthquake’s epicenter.

Chile, situated along a significant tectonic boundary, has a historical record of catastrophic earthquakes, including the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, which remains the most powerful ever documented.
