Acting IRS Chief Resigns After Refusing to Comply With Illegal Immigrant-Sharing Deal

The current acting head of the Internal Revenue Service, Melanie Krause, intends to resign following her disagreement with a decision to disclose tax information regarding illegal immigrants to federal law enforcement agencies, as announced by the Treasury Department on Tuesday.

Krause is the third leader of the IRS to depart this year, as tensions regarding political influences within the agency continue to escalate.

On Monday, the IRS and the Department of Homeland Security concluded an agreement that permits the sharing of taxpayer information with immigration authorities to assist in identifying undocumented immigrants. Krause is said to have opposed this decision and was marginalized by the Treasury Department, which advocated for the agreement despite apprehensions regarding federal privacy regulations.

Krause’s resignation comes after a comparable exit by her predecessor, Doug O’Donnell, who similarly opposed data-sharing agreements.
