The terrifying reason cruise ship passengers are asked to turn off lights and close curtains when traversing specific waters

Traveling on a luxury cruise ship can be a remarkable adventure; however, many may be unaware of an unusual “threat” that can arise. Recently, a passenger aboard the Cunard Queen Anne, which is embarking on an 111-night inaugural world voyage from Hamburg, Germany, with stops in destinations like New York, Sydney, Hawaii, Penang, and Cape Town, revealed that passengers were advised to turn off lights and close curtains.

In a TikTok video that has garnered over 8 million views, the captain informed nearly 3,000 passengers of a “heightened level of security alertness” due to the ship’s passage through areas known for piracy. The individual who shared the captain’s message explained that closing the external promenade decks at night would help minimize the ship’s visibility.

The video sparked significant interest, with many viewers expressing surprise at the potential dangers. One commenter remarked, “Well, that sounds terrifying.” In response, the TikTok user clarified, “Not really, it’s just safety precautions; the risk is very low.” Another viewer noted, “I don’t know why, but I’m always shocked and amazed that real-life pirates exist.” A former cruise ship employee chimed in, stating, “There are certain areas where piracy occurs. We would have a special security team come onboard with firearms when passing by Somalia. You’re safe.” Another commenter added, “Honestly, if a cruise or passenger ship were attacked by pirates, the response from naval forces would be quick and decisive, especially compared to a regular merchant vessel.”

In a statement to Business Insider, a Cunard representative explained, “As part of standard maritime protocols, our captains may issue precautionary announcements when navigating through specific regions. There was no particular threat to the ship or its guests, and our onboard experience continued without interruption.”
