The bill, known as the **ERIC ADAMS Act**—a not-so-subtle jab at New York City’s sanctuary mayor—is officially titled the Establishing Responsibility for Illegals’ Crimes and Adding Deterrence and Accountability for Mayors’ Sanctuary Cities Act. If passed, this game-changing bill would allow federal prosecutors to charge mayors of sanctuary cities with criminal negligence resulting in manslaughter — a felony that carries up to seven years in prison — when an illegal immigrant commits a murder in their jurisdiction and the city’s sanctuary policy directly contributed to the crime.
In other words: if you knowingly harbor illegal aliens, ignore federal law, and someone dies as a result, you could go to prison.
And it’s about time.
Rep. Carter, who once served as a mayor himself, explained the bill’s purpose clearly: “The ERIC ADAMS Act will hold mayors of sanctuary cities criminally liable for murders committed in their jurisdictions by illegal aliens.”

His proposed legislation comes in the wake of the brutal murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student killed by an illegal alien in Athens, Georgia—a sanctuary city that, like so many others, ignored immigration law in favor of virtue signaling.
“Laken Riley and countless others could still be alive today if our immigration laws were respected,” Carter said in a statement to Fox News. “These mayors have blood on their hands, and it’s time they are held accountable.”

In another post on X (formerly Twitter), he reinforced that mayors who willingly undermine public safety by sheltering criminal illegals should face real consequences: “I’ve been a mayor.
