At its narrowest point, the strait is only about\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"269\">33\u201334 kilometers wide<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, yet it handles a massive portion of global energy trade. Nearly\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"371\">20\u201330% of the world\u2019s oil supply<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0and a significant share of\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" data-start=\"399\" data-end=\"430\">liquefied natural gas (LNG)<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0shipments pass through this narrow passage every day. Major oil-exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, and Iran depend on this route to ship energy to global markets.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\"><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"630\">\n<p data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"948\">Recently, tensions in the region increased after\u00a0<strong data-start=\"681\" data-end=\"727\">U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities<\/strong>, prompting Iran to threaten blocking the strait. If Iran were to close it, global oil supply chains could be severely disrupted, potentially causing\u00a0<strong data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"947\">oil prices to surge and triggering worldwide economic consequences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"948\">\n<p data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1185\">Countries like India would be particularly affected because a large share of their\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1033\" data-end=\"1090\">oil and LNG imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong>. Higher oil prices could lead to increased fuel costs, transportation expenses, and inflation.
