California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing backlash after remarks he made about his SAT score during a public conversation with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens went viral over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Speaking Sunday night at an event promoting his forthcoming memoir, Young Man in a Hurry, Newsom reflected on his academic struggles and sought to draw a point of relatability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not trying to impress you, I\u2019m just trying to impress upon you, \u2018I\u2019m like you. I\u2019m not better than you.\u2019 I\u2019m a 960 SAT guy,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m not trying to offend anyone,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m not trying to act all there if you got 940 \u2026 You\u2019ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarks quickly sparked criticism online, with detractors arguing that Newsom\u2019s attempt at self-deprecation veered into offensive territory.<\/p>\n

Several prominent Republicans and commentators accused Newsom of perpetuating stereotypes.<\/p>\n

Sen. Ted Cruz wrote that Newsom was engaging in \u201cthe soft bigotry of low expectations,\u201d reposting a message from political scientist Carol M. Swain that read, \u201cLiberal racism on display.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Tim Scott criticized the governor on X, writing, \u201cBlack Americans aren\u2019t your low bar. We\u2019ve built empires, created movements, outworked, outhustled and outsmarted people like you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) also weighed in, claiming Newsom had implied he was \u201clike a black person because he got a bad SAT score and can\u2019t read.\u201d<\/p>\n

Music artist Nicki Minaj criticized the governor as well, writing that his \u201cway of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can\u2019t read.\u201d<\/p>\n

As President Donald Trump put a snarky post on Truth Social, \u201cWow! Gavin Newscum just dropped out of the Presidential Race!!!\u201d<\/p>\n
