Ted Cruz was likely caught off guard on Wednesday night in the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., when President Donald Trump joked about nominating him for the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>During remarks promoting the administration\u2019s new Trump Account initiative, Trump praised Cruz as \u201ca brilliant legal mind,\u201d The Daily Mail\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a brilliant man,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIf I nominate him for the United States Supreme Court, I will get 100 percent of the vote. The Democrats will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out, and the Republicans will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audience responded with laughter, though it was unclear whether Cruz shared the sentiment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cNo, just no,\u201d Cruz said shortly afterward during an appearance on the Ruthless Podcast, according to video obtained by the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHell no,\u201d Cruz added.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Trump were serious, a Supreme Court nomination would require a vacancy, as justices serve lifetime appointments and there is no indication that any seat will open in the near future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The Ruthless Podcast is hosted by Josh Holmes, Comfortably Smug, and John Ashbrook, who regularly interview Republican lawmakers and political figures.<\/p>\n<p>The hosts were the first to air Cruz\u2019s reaction to Trump\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the comment was intended as a joke remains unclear, but it underscored that Cruz, a former political rival of Trump during the 2016 presidential race, remains within the president\u2019s good graces.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Earlier this week, a report indicated Cruz privately criticized Trump and Vice President JD Vance while speaking with donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. President, if we get to November of 2026 and people\u2019s 401(k)s are down 30 percent and prices are up 10 to 20 percent at the supermarket, we\u2019re going to go into Election Day and face a bloodbath,\u201d Cruz told donors, according to Axios.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to lose the House, you\u2019re going to lose the Senate, and you\u2019re going to spend the next two years being impeached every single week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was reportedly displeased with the remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cF you, Ted,\u201d Cruz recounted Trump saying.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange came weeks after reports that Cruz is preparing for a potential presidential run in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to reinstate a Florida law that would have allowed officials there to prosecute migrants who entered the state illegally. The court did not explain its ruling, which also noted the absence of any dissenting opinions. The order was issued in response to an emergency application.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s immigration law, SB 4-C, criminalizes entering the state after illegally entering the U.S. and evading immigration authorities. Last year, the Supreme Court allowed a similar law in Texas to take effect.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, an Obama appointee, issued an indefinite injunction against the law, finding it likely preempted by federal immigration law and unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Florida appealed to the Supreme Court last month after a three-judge panel from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the injunction.<\/p>\n<p>State Attorney General James Uthmeier argued in his appeal to the Supreme Court that the state\u2019s new policy does not conflict with federal law.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear why the high court allowed the similar Texas law to take effect but not the Florida statute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida carefully crafted both provisions to track, mimic, and depend upon federal immigration law precisely,\u201d he wrote, adding that a contrary view \u201cstrikes at the heart of states\u2019 ability to protect their citizens from the devastating effects of illegal immigration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Democratic politicians in and out of Minnesota are continuing to fan the flames of outrage with gaslighting remarks aimed at demonizing federal immigration enforcement agents and operations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author&#8217;s opinion.
