In July, the U.S. Department of Transportation canceled federal grants for the bullet train project intended to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Trump administration officials said the California High Speed Rail Authority had \u201cno viable plan\u201d to complete a major segment of the project running through the state\u2019s Central Valley, ABC News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/california-drops-lawsuit-seeking-reinstate-federal-funding-states-128710791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. The rail authority quickly filed suit challenging the decision, and at the time, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom called the funding withdrawal \u201ca political stunt to punish California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authority said this week it would instead focus on alternative funding sources to advance the project, which is now estimated to cost more than $100 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis action reflects the State\u2019s assessment that the federal government is not a reliable, constructive, or trustworthy partner in advancing high speed rail in California,\u201d an authority spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Donald Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have repeatedly criticized the project. Trump in July called the plan a \u201ctrain to nowhere\u201d and questioned whether it would ever be completed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Railroad we were promised still does not exist, and never will,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social. \u201cThis project was Severely Overpriced, Overregulated, and NEVER DELIVERED.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The rail authority\u2019s decision to drop the lawsuit comes as it seeks private investment to help finance the project.<\/p>\n<p>The authority recently secured $1 billion in annual funding through 2045 from California\u2019s cap and trade program.<\/p>\n<p>The cap and trade system sets a declining limit on greenhouse gas emissions from major polluters in the state.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Companies must reduce emissions, purchase allowances from the state or other businesses, or invest in projects designed to offset pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue generated from allowance sales is used to fund climate change mitigation efforts, affordable housing initiatives, transportation projects, and utility bill credits for Californians.<\/p>\n<p>Rail officials said shifting away from federal involvement creates new opportunities for the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving forward without the Trump administration\u2019s involvement allows the Authority to pursue proven global best practices used successfully by modern high speed rail systems around the world,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The project, first approved by voters in 2008, has faced repeated delays, cost overruns, and scaling back of its original scope.<\/p>\n<p>Construction is currently focused on segments in the Central Valley, far from the major population centers the system was originally designed to serve.
