The New York senator once again dismissed calls for him to step down, stating on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press on Sunday, \u201cI\u2019m not stepping down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danielle Vinson, a professor of politics and international affairs at Furman University in South Carolina, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/chuck-schumer-senate-leadership-gop-bill-exit-2049282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>\u00a0that Schumer might be planning a \u201cgraceful exit\u201d before his term concludes in January 2029, though he is unlikely to be forcibly \u201ctossed out\u201d as Senate leader.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Schumer has faced pressure to step down after he, along with eight Senate Democrats and independent Senator Angus King of Maine\u2014who caucuses with the party\u2014voted on March 14 to support a stopgap spending bill backed by President Donald Trump in order to avert a government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been suggestions that New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should mount a primary challenge against Schumer, despite the fact that he is not up for reelection until 2028.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez, nearly 40 years younger than Schumer, is frequently seen as a representative of a new generation of left-wing Democrats who should steer the party forward after the significant losses in the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Vinson noted that the 74-year-old Schumer is likely aware of the mounting demand for new leadership within the party, and that calls for his resignation may intensify. The outcome of the 2026 midterms may see him further \u201cencouraged and challenged\u201d him to step down, depending on the results.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said, \u201cIt\u2019s important that people know when it\u2019s time to go,\u201d when asked about Schumer at a town hall in the town of Golden on March 17.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Averting a government shutdown could have been an easy win for the Left. By putting country above party and reaching across the aisle, liberals could have launched a long-overdue rebrand. To actively push for a shutdown was both paradoxical and self-defeating, to say the least.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., referred to the passage of the spending bill as an \u201cassault on the economy, health care, the social safety net, and veterans.\u201d Rummell noted that \u201cthe irony must be lost on him\u2014because had he gotten his way, the shutdown he pushed for would have done just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump may occasionally pick fights with members of his own party, at the end of the day, Republicans still move in the same direction. Democrats, on the other hand, are flailing\u2014leaderless, visionless, and increasingly irrelevant,\u201d Rummell wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He concluded: \u201cLet Democrats continue to flail, and 2026 could be a repeat of last November.
