His decision comes in response to harsh criticism regarding his handling of a significant welfare assistance fraud scandal plaguing the state, following his unsuccessful bid as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe political gamesmanship we\u2019re seeing from Republicans is only making that fight harder to win,\u201d Walz charged in a statement,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fraud-fallout-forces-democratic-gov-tim-walz-abandon-minnesota-re-election-bid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as I reflected on this moment with my family and my team over the holidays, I came to the conclusion that I can\u2019t give a political campaign my all,\u201d the governor added. \u201cEvery minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can\u2019t spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity and the cynics who prey on our differences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I\u2019ve decided to step out of the race and let others worry about the election while I focus on the work,\u201d the governor announced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Governor Tim Walz began his campaign for a third four-year term in Minnesota back in September. Recently, however, he has come under significant scrutiny from President Donald Trump, Republicans, and even some Democrats, primarily due to a massive theft scandal that has emerged in a state known for its commitment to good governance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Since 2022, over 90 individuals\u2014many from Minnesota\u2019s sizable Somali community\u2014have been charged in what is being called the largest COVID-era fraud scheme in the nation. The total amount of money allegedly pilfered through fraudulent meal and housing programs, daycare centers, and Medicaid services is still being calculated, but the U.S. attorney in Minnesota has indicated that the scale of the fraud could surpass $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors reveal that some of those who have already pleaded guilty in this case used the stolen funds to purchase luxury cars, real estate, jewelry, and take international vacations. Some of the funds have even been traced overseas, raising concerns that they may have ended up in the hands of Islamic terrorists, Fox reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is on my watch, I am accountable for this and, more importantly I am the one that will fix it,\u201d Walz told reporters last month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The governor took steps to halt certain suspected fraudulent payments and called for an external audit of the state\u2019s Medicaid billing.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump consistently criticized Walz as \u201cincompetent,\u201d and during Thanksgiving, he used a derogatory term for individuals with developmental disabilities to refer to the governor.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal, which captured significant national attention over the past two months, gained even more traction in recent weeks after a video was released by 23-year-old YouTube content creator Nick Shirley. In his video, Shirley accused Somali-run daycare centers of widespread fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Just days later, the Trump administration took action by freezing federal child-care funding to Minnesota, Fox noted further.<\/p>\n<p>Walz criticized the Trump administration after the Trump administration announced the funding freeze. \u201cThis is Trump\u2019s long game,\u201d Walz wrote Tuesday in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters. It\u2019s a serious issue \u2014 but this has been his plan all along,\u201d he added. \u201cHe\u2019s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans,\u201d Walz wrote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a separate post Wednesday morning, Walz accused President Trump of \u201cusing an issue he doesn\u2019t give a damn about as an excuse to hurt working Minnesotans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services froze child care payments to Minnesota earlier Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy HHS Secretary Jim O\u2019Neill said he demanded an audit from the Walz administration following allegations raised in Shirley\u2019s video.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill said all payments from HHS\u2019s Administration for Children and Families to states nationwide will now require prior justification along with receipts or photo documentation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><button class=\"read-more-btn\">Read More<\/button><\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author&#8217;s opinion.
