It\u2019s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The ministry\u2019s\u00a0rebuke\u00a0followed widespread criticism from Jewish groups and New York Republicans who argued Mamdani\u2019s actions would weaken protections for the city\u2019s Jewish residents.<\/p>\n<p>The IHRA definition, used by the U.S. State Department since 2010, characterizes antisemitism as \u201ca certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews,\u201d including the \u201cdemonization or application of double standards to Israel.\u201d According to the Anti-Defamation League, more than 1,000 institutions worldwide have adopted the standard, describing it as the international consensus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist and the first Muslim to serve as New York City mayor,\u00a0defended\u00a0his decision as part of a broader effort to give his administration \u201ca clean slate\u201d following the Adams scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we did was sign an executive order that continued every executive order that predated the moment when our former mayor was indicted,\u201d Mamdani said Friday. \u201cThat was a moment when many New Yorkers lost faith in city government\u2019s ability to prioritize the needs of the public, as opposed to the needs of the person.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pressed by reporters about the backlash from Israel and Jewish advocacy groups, Mamdani insisted he would continue to combat antisemitism, but argued that the IHRA framework had drawn criticism even within the Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that a number of leading Jewish organizations have immense concerns around this definition,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cWe will deliver on our commitment to protect Jewish New Yorkers in a manner that is able to actually fulfill that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that his administration \u201cwill be relentless in its efforts to combat hate and division,\u201d pledging to \u201cfight the scourge of antisemitism by funding hate-crime prevention, celebrating our neighbors, and practicing a politics of universality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of Mamdani, including Jewish Voice for Peace, defended the rollback, saying the IHRA\u2019s language has been used to silence critics of Israeli government policy. But mainstream Jewish groups, led by the ADL and the American Jewish Committee, called the move \u201cdeeply irresponsible,\u201d warning it would embolden antisemitic behavior at a time of heightened tension in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Republican leaders also blasted the new mayor. \u201cThis is what happens when radical activists take over City Hall,\u201d said Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.). \u201cHe\u2019s siding with anti-Israel extremists over the safety of Jewish New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mamdani, 33, was sworn in shortly after midnight Thursday and moved swiftly to undo Adams\u2019 post-indictment directives. His first executive order declared: \u201cAll Executive Orders issued on or after September 26, 2024, and in effect on December 31, 2025, are hereby revoked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former mayor had been indicted for allegedly accepting illegal donations from Turkish sources to facilitate construction of a new Turkish consulate. The Justice Department ultimately dropped the case earlier this year, but the episode damaged Adams\u2019 political standing and set the stage for Mamdani\u2019s populist victory.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani also signed three housing-related orders on Thursday, establishing task forces to accelerate affordable development and address the city\u2019s worsening housing crisis. But his rescission of the Israel-related directives quickly overshadowed his domestic agenda and triggered international diplomatic blowback before his first full day in office had ended.<\/p>\n<p>By Friday evening, Mamdani\u2019s office was facing calls from both state lawmakers and foreign officials to reinstate the IHRA definition.
