Robin Webb has switched her party from Democrat to Republican.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, I\u2019m a mother, a rancher and a lawyer with deep personal and professional roots in Kentucky\u2019s coal country,\u201d the former Democrat said. \u201cAs the Democratic Party continues its lurch to the left and its hyperfocus on policies that hurt the workforce and economic development in my region, I no longer feel it represents my values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has become untenable and counterproductive to the best interests of my constituents for me to remain a Democrat,\u201d she said. \u201cWhile it\u2019s clich\u00e9, it\u2019s true: I didn\u2019t leave the party \u2014 the party left me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is a\u00a0tough hit\u00a0for the Democratic Party in the state, as Webb is from a rural area of Kentucky, which has been a stronghold for the blue party because of its union ties and coal mining industry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The news was\u00a0celebrated\u00a0by Robert Benvenuti, Chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike countless other Kentuckians, [Webb] has recognized that the policies and objectives of today\u2019s\u00a0Democratic Party\u00a0are simply not what they once were, and do not align with the vast majority of Kentuckians,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI always respected that [Webb] approached issues in a very thoughtful and commonsense manner, and that she never failed to keenly focus on what was best for her constituents,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is my pleasure to welcome Sen. Robin Webb to the Republican Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the state\u2019s Democratic Party lashed out at Webb, saying that she is \u201cnot a Democrat,\u201d which may not be the burn they think it is.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cSenator Webb has chosen to join a political party that is currently working around the clock to take health care away from over a million Kentuckians, wipe out our rural hospitals, take food off the table of Kentucky families, and take resources away from our public schools,\u201d Kentucky Democratic Party Chair Colmon Elridge said to Fox News Digital. \u201cIf those are her priorities, then we agree: she isn\u2019t a Democrat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This comes amid the federal government shutdown, which is\u00a0approaching almost 40 days.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic House and Senate leaders\u00a0sent a letter\u00a0to President Trump on Wednesday morning, a day after elections nationwide saw their party pick up gains in blue regions, demanding \u201cbipartisan\u201d talks to reopen the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe write to demand a bipartisan meeting of legislative leaders to end the GOP shutdown and decisively address the Republican healthcare crisis,\u201d the short letter began. \u201cDemocrats stand ready to meet with you anytime, anyplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes after most Senate Democrats\u00a0have voted 14 times\u00a0against a GOP-led spending bill to reopen the government.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0a new report\u00a0suggests that key elements of a potential deal to end the federal government shutdown are beginning to take shape \u2014 though it remains uncertain when, or even if, all sides will reach an agreement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to\u00a0Axios, the proposed \u201cthree-legged\u201d plan includes three main components: a Senate vote on Affordable Care Act tax credits, a short-term continuing resolution to give negotiators more time to finalize a full-year budget for the fiscal year that began October 1, and a separate vote to fund military construction, the legislative branch, and agriculture programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re getting close to an off-ramp here,\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>One sticking point, however, remains the duration of the continuing resolution to keep the government funded.<\/p>\n<p>Before Senate Democrats forced the government into a shutdown, the House had already passed a bill to keep it funded through November 21.<\/p>\n<p>If the Senate now\u00a0strikes a deal to reopen the government, the House will have to return to session and approve the measure, extending the funding deadline in the process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author\u2019s opinion.
