The unsigned order blocks a lower court ruling that found the new lines were likely unconstitutional because they appeared to be drawn based on race.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The Supreme Court\u2019s decision could have major implications for next year\u2019s midterm elections, which will determine control of the House for the final two years of Trump\u2019s presidency, CNN\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>Had the map been blocked, it would have upended Trump\u2019s nationwide push to avoid a Democratic majority.<\/p>\n<p>The court said the lower court likely erred by failing to honor what it called \u201cthe presumption of legislative good faith by construing ambiguous direct and circumstantial evidence against the legislature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The justices also said the lower court violated the \u201cPurcell principle,\u201d which generally warns federal courts against making late changes to election rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe District Court violated that rule here,\u201d the court said.\u00a0\u201cThe District Court improperly inserted itself into an active primary campaign, causing much confusion and upsetting the delicate federal-state balance in elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Justice Samuel Alito, joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, wrote separately that it was \u201cindisputable\u201d the map was adopted for \u201cpartisan advantage pure and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said that if the map was drawn for political reasons rather than racial ones, federal courts would have no jurisdiction to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Justice Elena Kagan dissented, writing that the ruling \u201cdisserves the millions of Texans whom the District Court found were assigned to their new districts based on their race.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Kagan wrote that the majority \u201closes sight of its proper role\u201d and should have reviewed the lower court for \u201cclear error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She argued the court could only reach this result by \u201carrogating to itself that court\u2019s rightful function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton applauded the ruling, calling the map a \u201cmassive win for Texas and every conservative who is tired of watching the left try to upend the political system with bogus lawsuits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Big Beautiful Map will be in effect for 2026,\u201d Paxton said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the ruling meant \u201cTexas is officially \u2014 and legally \u2014 more red.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the decision on X, writing, \u201cFederal courts have no right to interfere with a State\u2019s decision to redraw legislative maps for partisan reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats sharply criticized the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Texas House Minority Leader Gene Wu said, \u201cThe Supreme Court failed Texas voters today, and they failed American democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Damon Hewitt, president of the Lawyers\u2019 Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, called the ruling \u201ca serious blow to people of color in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere we are with an election around the corner and the Supreme Court is allowing Texas to use these sinister maps,\u201d Hewitt said.<\/p>\n<p>Texas officials had argued they needed urgent relief because candidate filing deadlines are imminent and the primary is approaching.<\/p>\n<p>The new map is expected to flip as many as five Democratic-held seats to Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans currently hold a three-seat majority, making those potential flips significant.<\/p>\n<p>The case became entangled with race after a Justice Department letter urged Texas to redraw districts it said were \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gov. Abbott publicly cited the DOJ letter and race concerns when directing lawmakers to redraw the map.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown wrote that the governor \u201cexplicitly directed the legislature to redistrict based on race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Texas asked the Supreme Court to intervene, claiming the lower court\u2019s decision created \u201cchaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alito issued a temporary administrative stay before the full court ruled.<\/p>\n<p>Six plaintiff groups urged the court not to rush.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas NAACP said the state could have avoided the controversy \u201csimply by following the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Legal challenges to mid-decade redistricting in Texas, California, and other states will continue in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department recently sued California officials over maps meant to help Democrats, with arguments scheduled next month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author\u2019s opinion.
