Elise Stefanik (R-NY) announced Friday that she is withdrawing from New York\u2019s 2026 governor\u2019s race and will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.The House Republican Conference chair, a close ally of President Trump, had been considered the clear frontrunner for the GOP nomination and enjoyed support from nearly every county Republican committee in the state.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>But in a statement posted to X, Stefanik said she was stepping aside to avoid what she called a \u201ccostly and unnecessary\u201d primary fight and to spend more time with her young family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile spending precious time with my family this Christmas season, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Governor and will not seek re-election to Congress,\u201d Stefanik wrote. \u201cWhile we would have overwhelmingly won this primary, it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Stefanik, 41, who has represented New York\u2019s 21st Congressional District since 2015, thanked her constituents and said her decision was driven by family priorities. \u201cWhile many know me as Congresswoman, my most important title is Mom,\u201d she said. \u201cAs a mother, I will feel profound regret if I don\u2019t further focus on my young son\u2019s safety, growth, and happiness \u2014 particularly at his tender age.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Her announcement came just one week after Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, another Trump ally, entered the GOP primary for governor. The two had traded sharp words over the past week, with Stefanik attacking Blakeman\u2019s record shortly after his campaign launch. Her abrupt exit clears the path for Blakeman to become the likely Republican nominee to challenge Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is seeking a second full term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank Congresswoman Elise Stefanik for her outstanding service to the people of New York and to all Americans,\u201d Blakeman said in a statement to The New York Post. \u201cThroughout her time in public office, Congresswoman Stefanik has been a strong voice for common-sense values, national security, and economic opportunity. At this pivotal moment for New York, it is essential that Republicans and all New Yorkers come together in unity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox, who had previously endorsed Stefanik, quickly shifted his support to Blakeman. \u201cElise Stefanik will remain a leader in our party and a powerful voice for our principles. We respect her decision and thank her for her efforts,\u201d Cox said. \u201cBruce Blakeman has my endorsement, and I urge our State Committee and party leaders to join me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar also praised Stefanik and signaled his intention to rally conservatives behind Blakeman. \u201cWe are disappointed that Congresswoman Elise Stefanik won\u2019t be running for governor this year, but we respect her decision and wish her the best,\u201d Kassar said.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump, who had remained neutral in the budding primary contest, responded warmly to Stefanik\u2019s decision. \u201cElise is a tremendous talent, regardless of what she does,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social. \u201cShe will have GREAT success, and I am with her all the way!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump had reportedly considered nominating Stefanik as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations earlier this year but ultimately kept her in Congress to preserve the GOP\u2019s narrow House majority.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div class=\"ai-lazy\" data-code=\"PHNjcmlwdCBhc3luYyBpZD0iQVY2NGJlMjE3YzIwYjE2ZWM0OWIwM2NjYjQiIHR5cGU9InRleHQvamF2YXNjcmlwdCIgc3JjPSJodHRwczovL3RnMS52aWRjcnVuY2guY29tL2FwaS9hZHNlcnZlci9zcHQ\/QVZfVEFHSUQ9NjRiZTIxN2MyMGIxNmVjNDliMDNjY2I0JkFWX1BVQkxJU0hFUklEPTY0ODg4NTQzYzEyMmE1NDQ1MTAwZjlkOCI+PC9zY3JpcHQ+\" data-class=\"Y29kZS1ibG9jaw==\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gov. Hochul\u2019s campaign sought to capitalize on Stefanik\u2019s withdrawal. \u201cElise Stefanik has finally acknowledged reality: If you run against Governor Kathy Hochul, you are going to lose,\u201d Hochul spokesperson Ryan Radulovacki said. He went on to attack Blakeman as \u201c100% MAGA\u201d and accused him of mismanaging Nassau County\u2019s public hospital system.<\/p>\n<p>Polling last month showed Hochul maintaining a solid lead over both Stefanik and Blakeman, though more than half of New Yorkers said they would prefer new leadership in Albany.<\/p>\n<p>While she is bowing out of electoral politics \u2014 at least for now \u2014 Stefanik is expected to serve out the remainder of her term, which runs through January 2027.
