Ron Johnson on Monday pushed back against President Trump\u2019s proposal to issue $2,000 \u201ctariff dividend\u201d checks to Americans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, arguing the money should instead go toward reducing the federal deficit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, told Fox Business Network\u2019s \u201cMornings With Maria\u201d that he supports the concept in principle but believes restoring the nation\u2019s fiscal stability should take precedence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re $38 trillion in debt,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve averaged $1.89 trillion deficits over the last five years. In the next 10 years, the projection\u2019s about $26 trillion from accumulated deficits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to address the deficit problem. We are on borrowed time here. So many people are whistling by the graveyard. If we\u2019re bringing in revenue through the tariffs, that oughta be applied to reduce the deficit,\u201d the Wisconsin Republican added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly suggested issuing tariff-funded payments to the public. Earlier this month, he proposed $2,000 checks for Americans below a certain income threshold, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated would be about $100,000 a year for families, the New York Post reported.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The plan would need approval from the Republican-controlled Congress, but Johnson and other GOP lawmakers have signaled that the proposal is unlikely to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t afford it,\u201d Johnson reiterated Monday. \u201cI wish we were in a position to return the American public their money, but we\u2019re not. Again, we\u2019ll have at least a $2 trillion deficit this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat compares to prior to the pandemic, President Trump had deficits of $800 billion. [Barack] Obama, his last four years, $550 billion a year. Now, we\u2019re $2 trillion? Completely unacceptable. We have to start focusing on that and doing something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The president\u2019s proposal came just days after Democrats won key off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia by emphasizing affordability. It also followed Supreme Court arguments over Trump\u2019s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to levy broad \u201creciprocal\u201d and \u201ctrafficking\u201d tariffs on dozens of countries.<\/p>\n<p>IEEPA tariffs are a central pillar of Trump\u2019s trade agenda and have generated roughly $90 billion in revenue between their rollout and Sept. 23, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, The Post added.<\/p>\n<p>Between Sept. 30, 2024, and Aug. 31, the United States collected $195.9 billion in tariff revenue.<\/p>\n<p>According to an estimate from Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the Tax Foundation, Trump\u2019s proposed $2,000 dividend payments would cost about $300 billion if limited to individuals earning under $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance on Thursday acknowledged that the Trump administration\u00a0faces growing skepticism\u00a0over its economic record, issuing a plea for patience ahead of what he predicted would be an eventual \u201ceconomic boom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that, after years of inflation under then-President Joe Biden, turning the economy around \u2013 signs of which are already visible \u2013 would take some time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe get it and we hear you, and we know that there\u2019s a lot of work to do,\u201d Vance said during a Breitbart News event. \u201cAs much progress as we\u2019ve made, it\u2019s going to take a little time for Americans to feel that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also highlighted the White House\u2019s continued effort to refine its economic message ahead of next year\u2019s midterm elections \u2014 and in the wake of Republican losses in deep blue New Jersey and Virginia earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Vance acknowledged that Americans remain frustrated by persistent affordability challenges that have dragged down the administration\u2019s approval ratings, including the cost of groceries. At one point, he even undercut one of Trump\u2019s frequently cited indicators of economic progress \u2014 a drop in egg prices since January \u2014 by noting that they are still too expensive for many households.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re an American who\u2019s just struggling to get by, you work hard, you pay your taxes, you want your kids to have good opportunities.
