State Sen. Todd Weiler said on his local podcast this week that the expansion could happen in the first week of the session.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cLike most states of our size, we\u2019re going to go up to seven, and that will probably happen in the first week of the session,\u201d Weiler said, ABC 4\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc4.com\/news\/politics\/inside-utah-politics\/utah-legislature-expand-supreme-court-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Weiler made the remarks while hosting the right-leaning podcast Political as Heck with attorney Corey Astill.\u00a0The discussion centered on a recent special session and the impact of Judge Dianna Gibson\u2019s November ruling on Utah\u2019s redistricting maps.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson ruled that the Legislature failed to follow Utah\u2019s anti-gerrymandering ballot initiative, Proposition 4, when it redrew congressional districts after court intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Weiler said the ruling took what he described as a small amount of power away from lawmakers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gibson has directed the lieutenant governor to resolve boundary issues involving district lines that cut through homes and apartment buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Weiler argued that if lawmakers had drawn the maps themselves, the legislature would have retained authority over those decisions.<\/p>\n<div of Supreme Court justices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we were a state in 1896 with less than 300,000 people, we had five Supreme Court justices,\u201d Weiler said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that we\u2019re 3.5 million people, we still have five Supreme Court justices,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of expanding the state\u2019s high court has been discussed for years, though the timing of a vote in the first week of the session has not been finalized.<\/p>\n<p>Legislative sources familiar with the discussions confirmed to ABC 4 that lawmakers are considering the governor\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Weiler said he first floated the idea of court expansion three or four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Gov.
