House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has intensified his inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein by directing Former President Bill Clinton and former two-time presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to participate in depositions next month.
\nThe committee seeks clarification regarding the Clintons\u2019 connections to the late convicted sex offender. Comer initially subpoenaed them in August, but the Clintons\u2019 attorney replied earlier this month, asserting they would only provide \u201ca written proffer of what little information\u201d they possess.<\/p>\n
Comer is resolute in obtaining their testimony in person instead of settling for a restricted written response. I would be interested to see both of them respond to questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiven the admission that your clients possess some relevant information, your position amounts to a demand that the Committee forgo in-person testimony, potentially relevant to its legislative oversight,\u201d Comer said. \u201cAdditionally, your suggestion that your clients\u2019 testimony would not be relevant to the stated purposes of the Committee\u2019s investigation because the events in question took place outside of the Clintons\u2019 respective official duties misses the Committee\u2019s point.\u201d<\/p>\n
Comer added, \u201cIt is precisely the fact President Clinton and Secretary Clinton each maintained relationships with Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell in their personal capacities as private citizens that is of interest to the Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 42nd president has been ordered to appear for his deposition at 10 a.m. Dec. 17. His wife, the former secretary of state, was directed to sit for her deposition at 10 a.m. the following day.<\/p>\n
Experts have suggested that the former president and former secretary of state may be able to invoke executive privilege to spurn the deposition, though it\u2019s unclear whether that would extend to \u201ctheir personal capacities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Epstein\u2019s madam Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking dozens of girls with the deceased pedophile, attended Chelsea Clinton\u2019s wedding in 2010.<\/p>\n
After leaving the White House, Bill Clinton flew more than a dozen times on Epstein\u2019s private jet, later dubbed the \u201cLolita Express.\u201d Hillary Clinton received donations for a Senate campaign from the financier before his run-ins with the law in the mid-2000s.<\/p>\n

Despite this, he continued to cozy up to powerful people in business and politics. In the past week, following the release of 23,000 Epstein emails, texts, and other documents, figures like Larry Summers, Bill Clinton\u2019s former Treasury secretary and Obama\u2019s economic advisor; Virgin Islands Delegate Stacey Plaskett; Obama\u2019s White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler; and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries all ended up caught in the fallout.<\/p>\n
Bill Clinton\u2019s relationship with Epstein is well-known, as Epstein visited the Clinton White House over a dozen times, and Clinton reported flying on Epstein\u2019s plane many times as well.<\/p>\n

The political and corporate elite couldn\u2019t seem to distance themselves from him fast enough in public, yet behind the scenes, plenty of them stayed close.<\/p>\n
Now, with the release of 23,000 Epstein emails, texts, and documents, the fallout is sweeping across the very circles that once pretended they barely knew the guy. Larry Summers \u2014 Bill Clinton\u2019s Treasury secretary and Obama\u2019s economic consigliere. Stacey Plaskett \u2014 the Virgin Islands delegate who suddenly can\u2019t explain away her cozy communications. Kathryn Ruemmler \u2014 Obama\u2019s White House counsel. Even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is feeling the heat.<\/p>\n
And of course, there\u2019s Bill Clinton \u2014 whose ties to Epstein are no secret. Epstein visited the Clinton White House more than a dozen times, and Clinton himself acknowledged flying on Epstein\u2019s plane multiple times:<\/p>\n
After Epstein\u2019s arrest but before he was found dead, a rep for Bill Clinton issued a statement that declared the former president had \u201cnot spoken to Epstein in well over a decade\u201d and \u201cknows nothing about the terrible crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clinton attorney David Kendall, in his previous response to the Oversight panel, wrote: \u201cWhat we have learned over the years about Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell is abhorrent.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe public\u2019s demand for transparency from its government about their criminality is both understandable and warranted,\u201d Kendall said. \u201cFormer President Clinton and former Secretary Clinton welcome legitimate oversight in this matter that is grounded in fact.\u201d<\/p>\n
