When you\u2019re running for public office, Rule No. 1 is pretty simple: don\u2019t trash the very community, city, or state you\u2019re trying to represent.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

And yet here we are.<\/p>\n

Aftyn Behn \u2014 a woke, pro-Mamdani Democrat in the Tennessee legislature \u2014 has managed to break that rule spectacularly, and at the worst possible moment. With less than two weeks before the special election in Tennessee\u2019s 7th Congressional District, she\u2019s now stuck defending remarks that make it sound like she can barely stand the place she wants to serve.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the kind of political self-own only a progressive activist could pull off. Behn, the Democratic nominee in the contest, is attracting attention this week following remarks she made during a 2020 podcast regarding her dislike for Nashville that have come back to light.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate all of the things that make Nashville apparently an \u2018it city\u2019 to the rest of the country,\u201d Behn said at the time.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also made a name for herself by trying to obstruct immigration enforcement operations in Tennessee \u2014 because of course she has. And if that weren\u2019t enough, she penned a 2019 op-ed back when she was a community organizer, casually branding the people of her own state as racists.<\/p>\n

So when you\u2019re a candidate like Behn \u2014 someone with a whole stack of inconvenient receipts hanging over your head in a race against Trump-backed Republican Matt Van Epps \u2014 what\u2019s the game plan?<\/p>\n

For Behn, the answer has been predictable:\u00a0lie, deny, deflect, and gaslight:<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, the republicans decided that they are going to start this narrative that me, the state representative who represents downtown Nashville, doesn\u2019t like the city,\u201d she said.<\/em><\/p>\n

[\u2026]<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSure, I get mad at the bachelorettes sometimes, I get mad at the pedal taverns, right?\u201d she said.<\/em><\/p>\n

But she clarifies she does like Nashville as a whole.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou are talking to someone who has cried no less than 10 times in the Country Music Hall of Fame,\u201d said Behn.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
