Trump asserted that the development of modern cities like Riyadh and Abu Dhabi was not the result of Western \u201cnation-builders,\u201d but rather the achievement of local populations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn the end, the so-called \u2018nation-builders\u2019 wrecked far more nations than they built,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThe interventionists were intervening in complex societies that they did not even understand themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump ran and won on a platform of peace-making and keeping the U.S. out of endless foreign conflicts, among other policies like sealing the U.S. border and mass deportations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Trump made the remarks during a multi-day visit to the region that included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, though he did not visit Israel\u2014a point noted by NBC\u2019s Kristen Welker.<\/p>\n<p>While Pence described the trip as a success overall, he criticized his former running mate for the comments made during the stop in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"as6078\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut, Kristen, I\u2019ve never been a fan of American presidents criticizing America on foreign soil,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to have the president in Saudi Arabia questioning America\u2019s global war on terror, and describing it as nation-building and interventionist, I thought was a disservice to generations of Americans who wore the uniform and who took the fight to our enemy, you know, in Afghanistan and in Iraq. And particularly giving that speech in Saudi Arabia, where 15 of the 19 9\/11 hijackers hailed from, not including Osama bin Laden, I thought was unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Riyadh, Trump said, \u201cnation-builders,\u201d \u201cneo-cons,\u201d and \u201cliberal non-profits,\u201d had \u201cspent trillions failing to develop Kabul and Baghdad\u201d and \u201cso many other cities\u201d during the war on terror \u2014 remarks that a majority of his supporters agree with.<\/p>\n<p>Pence said in February he\u00a0wants\u00a0to be a \u201cconstructive force for the conservative agenda\u201d during Trump\u2019s second term because he is one of the few Republicans who is ready to formally challenge the president.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Pence and Trump had a public falling out after the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, the former vice president said he would support the new Trump administration on issues he agreed with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, for me, it\u2019s always principles first. It\u2019s not personal,\u201d Pence said.<\/p>\n<p>Advancing American Freedom, Pence\u2019s political action committee, spent almost $1 million on ads against Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump\u2019s new Health and Human Services Secretary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As Pence put it, the \u201cnomination of an abortion rights supporter to be secretary of HHS is a dramatic departure from 50 years of strong pro-life leadership at HHS under Republican administrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked why Republicans might be reluctant to oppose Trump publicly, Pence said, \u201cI never speculate on motives. You know, I\u2019m not new to town. I\u2019ve waged lonely battles before.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-13\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut you know, you have to be willing to step out and lead,\u201d the former vice president said. \u201cMy hope is that when the next issue of life comes up, that people will have been encouraged, emboldened to know that they\u2019re not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re calling balls and strikes here,\u201d Pence told the AP. \u201cI think that the way we want to approach this is with integrity to principle. And I\u2019m very encouraged.
