Left-wing commentator Van Jones was among those raising alarm at Democratic socialist mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani\u2019s fiery victory speech, noting what he called an instant \u201ccharacter switch\u201d as soon as the election was called.<\/p>\n

A roaring Mamdani wasted no time in claiming a mandate for his progressive agenda and taunting President Trump as he rallied supporters Tuesday night, the New York Post\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jones told CNN that the 34-year-old\u2019s tone was a stark departure from the calm and collected image he showed on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he missed an opportunity. I think the Mamdani that we saw in the campaign trail, who was a lot more calm, who was a lot warmer, who was a lot more embracing, was not present in that speech,\u201d Jones said on a post-election panel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think his tone was sharp. I think he was using the microphone in a way that he was almost yelling. That\u2019s not the Mamdani that we\u2019ve seen on TikTok and the great interviews and stuff like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like it was a little bit of a character switch here,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat warm, open, embracing guy was not there tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones, who served as an adviser in the Obama administration, said Mamdani would have been wiser to reach out to voters still wary of his far-left platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of people trying to figure out, \u2018Can I get on this train with him or not? Is he going to include me? Is he going to be more of a class warrior even in office?\u2019\u201d Jones said. \u201cI think he missed a chance tonight to open up and bring more people into the tent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very young and he just pulled off something very, very difficult. I wouldn\u2019t write him off, but I think he missed an opportunity to open himself up tonight and I think that that will probably cost him going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani declared victory roughly two hours after polls closed.<\/p>\n

With nearly 98 percent of precincts reporting, Mamdani led with 50.4 percent of the vote to independent candidate Andrew Cuomo\u2019s 42 percent, according to the city Board of Elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this,\u201d Mamdani said in his 20-minute victory speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford and a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just the News has reportedly obtained internal documents from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) outlining how the group\u2019s New York City chapter, to which Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani belongs, plans to pressure him into implementing sweeping anti-Israel policies throughout city governance and public life.<\/p>\n

During the mayoral race, Mamdani attempted to downplay his ties to the group\u2019s more radical and revolutionary platform \u2014 and, according to Politico, the NYC DSA branch actively helped him do so by providing public cover to make his campaign appear more moderate than it truly was.<\/p>\n

According to the \u201cSocialists in Office\u201d website, the group is composed of \u201cDSA-endorsed elected officials who work together in the New York State Legislature to advance a socialist vision for working-class people across our state\u201d \u2014 and among those featured is Mamdani.<\/p>\n

A resurfaced video from 2023 shows Mamdani delivering the keynote address at the DSA\u2019s national conference, where he declared \u201cwhen the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it has been laced by the IDF.\u201d The remark drew sharp criticism at the time and underscored his alignment with the DSA\u2019s radical anti-Israel rhetoric \u2014 a stance he notably tried to soften during his mayoral campaign.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
