Josh Hawley\u2019s bill to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as the government shutdown stretches into its fourth week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cToday, tomorrow, if [Senate Majority Leader] John Thune would put it on the floor, it would pass overwhelmingly,\u201d Schumer said at a Capitol Hill press conference, The Hill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5579847-senate-snap-wic-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hawley\u2019s legislation, titled the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025, would ensure benefits continue until the shutdown ends.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Agriculture, which administers SNAP, has warned that millions of low-income Americans could lose access to food assistance beginning Saturday if Congress does not act.<\/p>\n<p>The bill has ten Republican co-sponsors: Sens. Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n introduced a competing measure Wednesday that would fund both SNAP and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as WIC.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Every Senate Democrat has co-sponsored the bill, named the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>According to the USDA, roughly 41.7 million Americans received SNAP benefits each month in fiscal year 2024 at a cost of $99.8 billion \u2014 about $187 per recipient monthly.<\/p>\n<p>WIC supported 6.7 million people during the same period, covering approximately 41 percent of U.S. infants, and cost $7.2 billion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Recipients are eligible to receive both SNAP and WIC benefits simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>USDA officials said this week that they will not tap into $5 billion in contingency funds previously set aside for emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Those funds, they said, are reserved for unforeseen crises such as natural disasters \u2014 not to continue operations during a lapse in government funding.<\/p>\n<p>Next month\u2019s SNAP benefits are expected to cost about $9.2 billion nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins reaffirmed the department\u2019s position Tuesday, telling CNN that USDA \u201ccannot legally use the contingency funds\u201d to issue November benefits.<\/p>\n<p>On the Senate floor Wednesday, Majority Leader John Thune showed rare anger, accusing Democrats of blocking multiple attempts to reopen the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tried to do that 13 times!
