Mitch McConnell, delivering a rare public rebuke of the former Republican leader for refusing to back a key Pentagon nominee.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The war of words began shortly after McConnell became the only Republican to vote against Elbridge Colby, who was chosen by President Donald Trump as the Defense Department\u2019s top policy strategist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake: America will not be made great again by those who are content to manage our decline,\u201d McConnell said in a statement that was quickly circulated on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMitch\u2019s vote today\u2014like so much of the last few years of his career\u2014is one of the great acts of political pettiness I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d Vance noted in an X post.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>A wave of other conservative voices joined the VP, fed up with McConnell\u2019s feud with and behavior toward the president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElbridge Colby is one of the brightest foreign policy minds in the\u00a0GOP\u00a0and it\u2019s pathetic watching Mitch McConnell continue to stand with Dems to sabotage President Trump,\u201d Kentucky businessman Nate Morris\u00a0wrote on X. \u201cThis is why whoever replaces Mitch for Senate needs to represent a clean break from him \u2013 Time for a change!\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA)\u00a0replied\u00a0to Vance\u2019s post: \u201cGlad things are changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Breitbart News referred to McConnell as \u201cChina-linked Senator Mitch McConnell\u201d in an\u00a0X post blasted to its followers. \u201cMITCH MCCONNELL IS A TRAITOR !!\u201d conservative David Hardin declared\u00a0on X.<\/p>\n<p>Colby was ultimately confirmed by the Senate largely along party line votes, 54-45, with most Democrats once again opposed for the sake of simply disagreeing with Trump.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>McConnell suggested in his lengthy statement that Colby\u2019s confirmation could \u201cdo irreparable damage to the system of alliances and partnerships\u201d at the Pentagon, without really providing any evidence to back up his claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I have expressed repeatedly, I remain committed to supporting national security nominees whose records and views make them assets, not liabilities, in the restoration of U.S. hard power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Colby has long advocated for a reorientation of American power away from Europe and the Middle East towards the Indo-Pacific as a clearly ascendant China becomes the dominant threat for the foreseeable future. It\u2019s not clear why McConnell thinks that is a bad strategy, especially since the Pentagon has been warning about a rising China for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell took another shot at Trump last month, suggesting the 47th president\u2019s refusal to blame Russia as the sole aggressor who provoked the war in Ukraine \u201creflects a gross misunderstanding of the nature of negotiations and leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement commemorating the third anniversary of the war, McConnell asserted that Vladimir Putin bears sole responsibility for the \u201chuman catastrophe\u201d and warned that even if Ukrainian forces surrendered their weapons, \u201cPutin\u2019s aims would not stop with Kyiv.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMistaking this fact is as embarrassing as it is costly,\u201d McConnell said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He also said that the Biden administration\u2019s \u201cshameful hesitation and half-measures\u201d in responding to Russian aggression were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>While McConnell did not mention Trump by name, he did say that refusing to see that the US wants to defeat Russian aggression would be \u201ceven more disgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRefusing to acknowledge Russia as the undeniable and unprovoked aggressor is more than an unseemly moral equivalency \u2014 it reflects a gross misunderstanding of the nature of negotiations and leverage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell, who is the head of the Senate\u2019s Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, made the statement a few days after Trump said that Trump believed Ukraine started the war with Russia and called Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, \u201ca dictator without elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica is right to seek an end to this war, but an end that fails to constrain Russian ambition, ensure Ukrainian sovereignty, or strengthen American credibility with both allies and adversaries is no end at all,\u201d McConnell warned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author&#8217;s opinion.
