Forbes estimates the Mellon family\u2019s net worth at around $14 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The Mellon family fortune dates back more than a century to Andrew Mellon, who served as Treasury Secretary from 1921 to 1932 and played a central role in shaping U.S. economic policy during the 1920s. That means the Pentagon may be unable to use Mellon\u2019s money until the shutdown ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe donation was made on the condition that it be used to offset the cost of service members\u2019 salaries and benefits,\u201d Parnell said, adding that the matter is under legal review.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Trump had ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to \u201cuse all available funds to get our troops paid\u201d despite the shutdown. The Pentagon later said it was drawing from \u201cleftover research and development funds\u201d to meet payroll temporarily.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Senate voted 54\u201345 on Thursday against a stand-alone measure to fund military pay during the shutdown, with Democrats arguing that partial funding would reduce pressure to reopen the government fully.<\/p>\n<p>Trump blasted the decision, saying troops \u201cshould never be used as leverage in a political fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am using my authority as Commander in Chief to direct our Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to use all available funds to get our troops paid on October 15th,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>While the Pentagon scrambles to determine how to handle Mellon\u2019s extraordinary donation, the gesture has already made waves in Washington \u2014 both for its patriotism and its potential to test the limits of executive spending power.<\/p>\n<p>As one senior defense official told The Post, \u201cThis is the first time in modern history that a private citizen has tried to cover military payroll during a shutdown.
