President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Democrats of \u201cholding the entire federal government hostage\u201d during the ongoing government shutdown, saying Republicans would not bow to \u201cextortion\u201d over spending demands.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a lunch event in the White House Rose Garden, Trump blasted Schumer and his caucus for refusing to advance a short-term funding measure known as a continuing resolution (CR) that would reopen the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cChuck Schumer and the Senate Democrats need to vote for the clean, bipartisan CR and reopen our government. It\u2019s got to be reopened right now,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey are the obstructionists. And the reason they\u2019re doing it is because we\u2019re doing so well. We\u2019re doing well all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shutdown, now in its 21st day, began after Democrats rejected a temporary funding measure over disputes involving immigration enforcement, border operations, and reductions to climate and housing programs. Federal agencies have begun scaling back services as the standoff drags on, with hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed or working without pay.<\/p>\n

Trump placed direct blame on Schumer for the stalemate, referring to it as \u201cthe Schumer shutdown.\u201d \u201cYou can call it the Schumer shutdown or the Democrats\u2019 shutdown \u2014 call it whatever you want,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe will not be extorted on this crazy plot of theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president also mocked Schumer\u2019s standing within his party, saying the Democratic leader was \u201cin deep trouble\u201d and \u201closing in all of the polls.\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s even losing to AOC, plus three,\u201d Trump said, referencing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and her progressive allies in Congress.<\/p>\n

Trump said Democrats were blocking funding to protect \u201cwasteful programs\u201d and \u201cpet projects\u201d that his administration has sought to eliminate. \u201cMany of the things that they wanted are things that we don\u2019t want \u2014 things that are just so bad for our country, and we\u2019re cutting those things out,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

He singled out Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought for his role in reshaping the federal budget, jokingly referring to him by a nickname used by Democrats. \u201cYou know, they call him Darth Vader. I call him a fine man,\u201d Trump said. \u201cBut he\u2019s cutting Democrat priorities, and they\u2019re never going to get them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president called on Senate Democrats to \u201cstop the madness\u201d and allow the government to reopen. \u201cIn the greatest moment in the history of our country, in terms of wealth, in terms of job creation, and in terms of investment coming in, these guys go on strike. It\u2019s really a shame,\u201d Trump said. \u201cSo I\u2019m asking them to be smart. It\u2019s not working. They\u2019re getting killed in the polls. The public understands what they\u2019re doing. They\u2019re doing the wrong thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republican leaders have backed Trump\u2019s position, arguing that Democrats are using the shutdown to stall his deportation initiatives and budget rollbacks. Democrats, meanwhile, have accused Trump of engineering the crisis to secure leverage for broader executive powers and cuts to domestic spending.<\/p>\n

The shutdown has drawn attention to growing divisions within the Democratic Party, as progressives press Schumer to take a harder line against Trump\u2019s immigration enforcement and fiscal reforms.<\/p>\n

Trump, who has sought to highlight those divisions, appeared to suggest Schumer has lost control of his caucus. \u201cI think he\u2019s mentally gone. He\u2019s been beat up by young radical lunatics \u2014 and I think Chuck Schumer is, he\u2019s gonzo,\u201d the president said later Tuesday on social media.<\/p>\n

White House officials said negotiations remain ongoing but stressed that the administration would not agree to new spending conditions. \u201cThe president has been clear \u2014 the government will reopen when Democrats stop holding it hostage for political gain,\u201d a senior aide said.<\/p>\n

So far, Senate Democrats have shown little sign of relenting, leaving Congress gridlocked as federal agencies warn that certain benefits and operations could be delayed if the shutdown continues into November.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
