\u201cAffirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America\u2019s key institutions\u2014it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table. In the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s recent decision, it\u2019s time to redouble our efforts,\u201d former President Obama said in a retweet of his wife, Michelle Obama\u2019s, press release.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in college, I was one of the few Black students on my campus, and I was proud of getting into such a respected school,\u201d the former first lady said. \u201cI knew I\u2019d worked hard for it. But still, I sometimes wondered if people thought I got there because of affirmative action. It was a shadow that students like me couldn\u2019t shake, whether those doubts came from the outside or inside our own minds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the fact is this: I belonged. And semester after semester, decade after decade, for more than half a century, countless students like me showed they belonged, too. It wasn\u2019t just the kids of color who benefitted, either. Every student who heard a perspective they might not have encountered, who had an assumption challenged, who had their minds and their hearts opened gained a lot as well. It wasn\u2019t perfect, but there\u2019s no doubt that it helped offer new ladders of opportunity for those who, throughout our history, have too often been denied a chance to show how fast they can climb,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court released its final decisions of the term Friday morning, handing down its highly-anticipated ruling on President Joe Biden\u2019s student debt relief.<\/p>\n

The nation\u2019s highest court weighed the Biden administration\u2019s plan to erase up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers and up to $20,000 for recipients of Pell Grants.<\/p>\n

In the Dept. of Education v. Brown, the Court ruled 9-0 that they do not have standing and tossed the lawsuit. This involves individual borrowers.<\/p>\n

In Biden v. Nebraska, the justices ruled 6-3 against it. To be clear, the court has struck down the Biden Administration debt-forgiveness program.<\/p>\n

On the merits of the plan, the Biden administration had relied on the HEROES Act, a post-9\/11 law that allows the Secretary of Education to \u201cwaive or modify any statutory or regulatory provision applicable to the student financial assistance programs . . . as the Secretary deems necessary in connection with a war or other military operation or national emergency,\u201d SCOTUS Blog\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are several legal instances involving the cancellation of student loans. In one instance, a class action complaint claimed that the Education Department had improperly delayed or denied hundreds of thousands of petitions for borrower defense to repayment.
