Vance cast two critical tie-breaking votes this week to push forward a sweeping $9.4 billion rescissions package in the U.S. Senate. The package includes major cuts to public broadcasting and foreign aid, sparking sharp debate across party lines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-9\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_1\" data-google-query-id=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23293390090\/usaunfiltered24.com\/usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"785\">The Senate was deadlocked 50-50 on two procedural motions to begin debate on the legislation, requiring Vice President Vance\u2019s votes to move the bill forward. Collins, citing a lack of clarity from the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1495\">Office of Management and Budget (OMB)<\/strong>\u00a0about which specific programs would be cut. \u201cThat\u2019s not because we haven\u2019t had time to review the bill. It\u2019s because OMB hasn\u2019t provided the necessary details.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_2\" data-google-query-id=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23293390090\/usaunfiltered24.com\/usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1658\" data-end=\"1851\">Collins also objected to the scale of proposed cuts to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"1748\">development assistance programs<\/strong>, which fund essential services like education, clean water, and food security in developing countries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1954\">\n<p data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1954\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t just numbers on a spreadsheet. These cuts could have serious consequences,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"2173\">In response to bipartisan pressure, Senate leaders indicated that\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2113\">$400 million in planned cuts to the President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)<\/strong>\u00a0may be restored through an amendment before the final vote.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2175\" data-end=\"2392\">Senate Majority Leader\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2219\">John Thune (R-SD)<\/strong>\u00a0said discussions are underway to modify the package slightly, which could bring the total rescissions closer to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2346\">$9 billion<\/strong>\u00a0while preserving certain global health funds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-11\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_3\" data-google-query-id=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23293390090\/usaunfiltered24.com\/usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_3_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2394\" data-end=\"2534\">\n<p data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2534\">\u201cThere\u2019s broad support for scaling back some foreign aid, but we want to ensure critical programs like PEPFAR are protected,\u201d Thune noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2726\">The proposed defunding of NPR and PBS drew additional criticism, particularly from rural lawmakers who say public broadcasting provides essential local news coverage and educational content.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2728\" data-end=\"2946\">\n<p data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2946\">\u201cI share concerns about NPR\u2019s bias,\u201d Collins acknowledged, \u201cbut public media stations also provide access to beloved programming like\u00a0<em data-start=\"2864\" data-end=\"2883\">Antiques Roadshow<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em data-start=\"2888\" data-end=\"2917\">Daniel Tiger\u2019s Neighborhood<\/em>\u00a0that many families rely on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"3122\">The Senate is expected to debate amendments before holding a final vote in the coming days.
