CNN anchor Dana Bash took House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to task during an interview this week over the \u201cSchumer Shutdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point during the interview, Bash suggested that, based on what the New York Democrat previously said, there is room for negotiation between what his party and majority Republicans want in terms of what it will take to reopen the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo all of that is in the bill that you tried to pass, and it didn\u2019t pass, that\u2019s in your proposal, but you started that answer by saying we want to sit down and talk about it. That suggests that what you just said is negotiable, is it?\u201d Bash asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re always ready and willing and able to have a good faith discussion with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to entertain any ideas that they may put forth with respect to both reopening the government and of decisively addressing the Republican health care crisis,\u201d Jeffries responded, attempting to blame his party\u2019s refusal to back a clean continuing resolution on the GOP.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem that we confront, Dana, is that Republicans have gone radio silent since the shutdown began. No conversations, no meetings, no discussions. Donald Trump has held them back from even having a meaningful engagement to try to find common ground,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bash then pinned Jeffries down with a follow-up question: \u201cYou\u2019re right down the hall from Mike Johnson\u2019s office. I know exactly where you are. You could probably take a few steps and go knock on the door and talk to him. Have you tried that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeffries said, \u201cSpeaker Johnson hasn\u2019t been given permission to have a conversation with me or Leader Schumer, and he said as much earlier today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you don\u2019t think he would talk to you at all?\u201d Bash pressed.<\/p>\n

The minority leader, in response, offered a plethora of excuses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can have a conversation, but the problem is that until they get the green light to actually have a meaningful discussion to try to find common ground and a bipartisan path forward and a willingness to address the damage that Republicans have done to the health, the safety and the economic well-being of the American people, then, of course, any informal discussion is going to be not fruitful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
