It is political extortion, by any other name,\u201d Trump said. \u201cTell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party, the Radical Left Lunatics, to GO TO HELL!\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cDo not accept the offer,\u201d he continued. \u201cGo home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are, and what a great job the Republicans are doing, and have done, for our Country. Have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of finding a way to vote on up to 60 of the president\u2019s nominees, all of whom passed through committee with bipartisan support, senators quickly voted on seven before leaving Washington until September.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But Schumer saw Trump\u2019s move as a victory for Senate Democrats. He argued that the president abandoned negotiations while he and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., sought a bipartisan solution, \u201cprovided the White House and Senate Republicans met our demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took his ball, he went home, leaving Democrats and Republicans alike wondering what the hell happened. Trump\u2019s all-caps Tweet said it all. In a fit of rage, Trump threw in the towel, sent Republicans home, and was unable to do the basic work of negotiating,\u201d Schumer said, standing next to a poster-sized version of the president\u2019s post.<\/p>\n<p>However, prior to the president\u2019s order, both sides of the aisle believed they were on the point of reaching an agreement to accommodate Trump\u2019s wish to have his candidates confirmed while also leaving Washington.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Thune stated that \u201clots of offers\u201d were exchanged between him and Schumer throughout the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were several different times where I think either or both sides maybe thought there was a deal in the end,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Democrats wanted the White House to unfreeze billions of dollars in National Institute of Health and foreign aid funding, as well as a future guarantee that the White House would not issue any further clawback packages.<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, they would approve several of Trump\u2019s uncontroversial candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma Republican\u00a0Sen. Markwayne Mullin accused Schumer of going \u201ctoo far\u201d by upping the price tag on his demands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had three different deals since last night,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd every time it\u2019s been, every time it\u2019s \u2018I want more,\u2019\u201d Mullin said of Schumer\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n<p>Mullin said Republicans weren\u2019t caught off guard by Trump\u2019s call to halt talks and explained that the White House had been heavily involved in the negotiations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou get to a realization that there was, it was never about making a deal,\u201d Mullin continued. \u201cThey want to go out and say the President\u2019s being unrealistic, and because he can\u2019t answer to his base to make a deal like we have in every other president in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Republicans won\u2019t pursue recess appointments; however, Mullin noted that a rule change to the confirmation process will be implemented when lawmakers return in September as a response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe asks evolved on both sides quite a bit over time,\u201d Thune said. \u201cBut in the end, we never got to a place where we had both sides agree to lock it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Democrats, on the other hand, said that their offer had never altered and that Republicans continued to increase the number of nominees they wanted across the line, attempting to include more unpopular, partisan picks.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer refused to share the specifics of his demands but argued that any changes to Senate rules would be a \u201chuge mistake\u201d and urged Trump to engage with Senate Democrats going forward, especially as Congress approaches yet another federal funding deadline in September.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author&#8217;s opinion.
