Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she has \u201cconsidered\u201d joining the Senate Democratic caucus but expressed doubts about the move, citing significant policy differences and skepticism that Democrats are significantly better than Republicans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Murkowski, seen as a key vote on the Republican legislative package expected on the Senate floor this week, has voiced frustration with the two-party system. In a recent podcast interview, she said she may explore becoming an independent while continuing to align with Democrats on certain major issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be not being honest with you if I said I\u2019ve never been asked \u2026 \u2018Why don\u2019t you switch?\u2019 Or people have said, \u2018You should switch,\u2019\u201d Murkowski said in a recent interview with Semafor ahead of the release of her new book, \u201cFar from Home: An Alaskan Senator Faces the Extreme Climate of Washington, D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski acknowledged she has thought about switching to the Democratic Party but gave no indication she is close to making such a move, which would carry significant implications for the balance of power in the Senate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cHave I considered it? She secured a significant victory on that issue in 2017, when Congress approved legislation authorizing oil lease sales in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a measure that passed despite strong Democratic opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Druke asked Murkowski whether she would consider becoming an independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats if doing so shifted control of the chamber to Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and came with assurances that her top policy priorities for Alaska would be advanced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an interesting hypothetical,\u201d she said, adding that the right way to look at it is \u201cif this would help Alaskans.\u201d She said: \u201cI have to figure how I can be most effective for the people that I serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski cautioned that she could not change her political identity simply for convenience, recalling that some supporters urged her to run as a Libertarian in 2010 after she lost the Republican primary. She instead won that year\u2019s general election as a write-in candidate, The Hill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5366218-murkowski-considering-senate-switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed during the podcast about the possibility of caucusing with Democrats as an independent, Murkowski acknowledged the option but stopped short of committing.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if she could envision a scenario where she became an independent or unaligned if it benefited Alaska, Murkowski responded, \u201cThere may be that possibility.\u201d She pointed to the Alaska Legislature, which is controlled by a bipartisan coalition, as an example of that approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of things I think is good and healthy for us,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve kind of embraced a governing style that says if you\u2019ve got good ideas \u2026 it doesn\u2019t make any difference if you\u2019re a Republican or a Democrat, we can govern together for the good of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Getty Images This article may contain commentary which reflects the author&#8217;s opinion.
