Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she has \u201cconsidered\u201d joining the Senate Democratic caucus but expressed doubts about the move, citing significant policy differences and skepticism that Democrats are significantly better than Republicans.<\/p>\n

Murkowski, seen as a key vote on the Republican legislative package expected on the Senate floor this week, has voiced frustration with the two-party system. In a recent podcast interview, she said she may explore becoming an independent while continuing to align with Democrats on certain major issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be not being honest with you if I said I\u2019ve never been asked \u2026 \u2018Why don\u2019t you switch?\u2019 Or people have said, \u2018You should switch,\u2019\u201d Murkowski said in a recent interview with Semafor ahead of the release of her new book, \u201cFar from Home: An Alaskan Senator Faces the Extreme Climate of Washington, D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murkowski acknowledged she has thought about switching to the Democratic Party but gave no indication she is close to making such a move, which would carry significant implications for the balance of power in the Senate.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave I considered it? Yes, because I\u2019ve been asked the question,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Murkowski admitted that there are times when she feels uncomfortable within the Republican Party.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I feel that within my Republican conference, I always feel like I\u2019m right here in my political home? No. There\u2019s some directions and policies that I disagree with,\u201d she told the outlet, but went on to say that her political outlook generally aligns \u201cmore closely\u201d with the GOP.<\/p>\n

Murkowski also pointed to challenges within the Democratic Party, noting its internal divisions following former Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019s loss in all seven battleground states to President Trump in the 2024 election and Democrats\u2019 subsequent loss of control in the Senate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs challenged as I think we may be on the Republican side, I don\u2019t see Democrats being much better,\u201d she told Galen Druke, host of the \u201cGD Politics\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve got not only their own share of problems but, quite honestly, they\u2019ve got some policies that I just inherently disagree with,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
