However, signs of potential compromise emerged Tuesday when Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Angus King, a Maine Independent who caucuses with Democrats, continued to side with Republicans in supporting a clean spending plan, Politico\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/06\/senate-votes-for-fifth-time-against-advancing-legislation-to-end-the-shutdown-00595519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Several rounds of voting have produced a 55\u201345 outcome, leaving Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) still five votes short of the 60 needed to advance the funding measure.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman has backed the Republican plan since the first vote on the proposal was held on September 19.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cShutting our government down isn\u2019t a \u2018game.\u2019 Democrat or Republican, regardless of the reason\u2014 America loses. \u2018Blame\u2019 is on anyone that picks party over country,\u201d Fetterman said on X on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>That same day, Cortez Mastro said Republicans \u201cneed to come to the negotiating table and fix the health care crisis they\u2019ve created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, on Tuesday, the Nevada Democrat explained why she changed her stance, saying her party \u201cshould not be swapping the pain of one group of Americans for another.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>And though her party is responsible for blocking passage of a clean spending bill, thereby reopening the goverment, she nevertheless tried to pin it on President Donald Trump and Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump and Congressional Republicans are already hurting Nevadans who are dealing with high costs, an economic slowdown, and a looming health care crisis. This administration doesn\u2019t care about Nevadans, but I do,\u201d she wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I cannot support a costly shutdown that would hurt Nevada families and hand even more power to this reckless administration. We need a bipartisan solution to address this impending health care crisis, but we should not be swapping the pain of one group of Americans for another,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s vote was the first time that King has sided with the GOP, a vote he said was \u201cone of the most difficult\u201d he has made since being in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not want to hand Donald Trump and Russell Vought and Stephen Miller additional power to decimate the federal government, to decimate the programs that are so important to so many people,\u201d King said in a video posted to X.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the sole Republican to oppose the spending bill, unsurprisingly, is Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, as the shutdown continued, Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conservativebrief.com\/trump-mass-95778\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set a deadline<\/a>\u00a0for when his administration would begin implementing cuts to federal workers and programs if the ongoing government shutdown is not resolved.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said that if the shutdown continues for four to five more days, his administration could move forward with mass layoffs and reductions across multiple federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many permanent jobs are you talking about eliminating?\u201d a reporter asked Trump during an Oval Office meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be able to tell you that in four or five days. If this keeps going on, it\u2019ll be substantial, and a lot of those jobs will never come back,\u201d Trump responded. \u201cYou\u2019re going to have a lot closer to a balanced budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reporter also questioned Trump about any programs he wished to cut during the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, sure. We have a lot, I\u2019m not going to tell you, but we\u2019ll be announcing it pretty soon.
