Former Vice President Kamala Harris continued to incorrectly claim that the 2024 presidential election was the \u201cclosest\u201d of the 21st Century before standing up and shouting that President Donald Trump \u201cdoes not have a mandate\u201d during her weekend book tour stop in Houston.<\/p>\n

Harris made the comments Saturday at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts, a 2,650-seat venue, while promoting her new book,\u00a0107 Days<\/em>. She told the audience she was proud of what she called an \u201cunprecedented\u201d 3.5-month campaign against Trump, who she said \u201chad been running for 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s the other thing that is quite unprecedented \u2014 and it was the tightest, closest presidential election in the 21st Century,\u201d Harris said, rising from her seat. \u201cHe does not have a mandate! That is not a mandate! That is not a mandate!\u201d<\/p>\n

The outburst drew loud cheers from the audience, with one attendee shouting back, \u201cAnd he never did!\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris later joked that moderator Carlos Eduardo Espina \u2014 a self-described \u201ccommunity organizer and immigrant rights activist\u201d \u2014 became so energized by her comments that he stood up too.<\/p>\n

The former vice president has repeated the claim that the 2024 race was the closest of the century multiple times during her recent tour, including at her alma mater, Howard University, on Sept. 27, and during an MSNBC appearance last month.<\/p>\n

But by every major measure, Harris\u2019s claim is false.<\/p>\n

Trump defeated Harris in the Electoral College, 312 to 226 \u2014 the largest margin since 2012. In the popular vote, Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 campaign finished closer to victory than Harris\u2019s, and by the \u201ctipping point\u201d metric \u2014 which measures the smallest shift in votes needed to change the outcome \u2014 Harris\u2019s loss also trailed the performances of John Kerry in 2004, Clinton in 2016, and Trump in 2020.<\/p>\n

During the Houston event, Harris reflected on her 2024 campaign, saying she missed the \u201coptimism, enthusiasm, and dare I say, joy\u201d that surrounded it. She urged supporters not to lose hope, saying, \u201cIt is the light that we each carry inside of us \u2026 and we cannot lose sight of that or let that light be in any way extinguished.\u201d<\/p>\n
