Bence Horvath, 47, a dual citizen of Hungary and Spain who lived in the United Arab Emirates, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court to 31 months in prison for planning to send U.S.-made radio communications technology to Russian end users without a license.<\/p>\n
On June 17, 2025, Horvath admitted to one count of conspiring to send commodities to Russia illegally. Along with the jail time, U.S. District Court Judge John D. Bates told Horvath to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $5,000 fine.<\/p>\n
After he finishes his term, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that Horvath will be deported, the Justice Department reported.<\/p>\n
Court filings indicate that Horvath and others began discussing with a small U.S. radio distribution company the acquisition and shipment of military-grade radios and other U.S.-made accessories to Russia as early as January 2023. Horvath toiled for months to get those things, which he planned to send to Russia through a freight forwarder in Latvia.<\/p>\n

\nHorvath bought 200 military-grade radios as part of the plot and planned to send them to Russia. But Horvath didn\u2019t get what he wanted. The radios were stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection so that they wouldn\u2019t get into the hands of Russian end users who weren\u2019t allowed to have them.<\/p>\n
The Department of Commerce\u2019s Office of Export Enforcement, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service Southeast Field Office, and Homeland Security Investigations New Orleans looked into this matter.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Northern District of California was quite helpful.<\/p>\n

\nPirro has been busy lately.<\/p>\n
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro highlighted steep declines in violent crime during a community meeting, even as residents voiced concerns about masked federal agents, increased immigration enforcement, and new federal policies aimed at harsher punishments.<\/p>\n
Pirro\u2019s remarks came during a post-surge accountability forum hosted by the 3rd District Citizens Advisory Council, which covers Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant, Shaw, Logan Circle, and Bloomingdale.<\/p>\n

\nDuring the nearly hour-long discussion, Pirro credited President Donald Trump\u2019s law enforcement surge across the District with producing sharp drops in violent crime. She said homicides are down 53%, robberies have fallen 59%, and violent crime overall is down between 39% and 40%.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one can deny that crime has gone down,\u201d Pirro said. \u201cThat there is a deterrent effect. That people are not as willing to shoot, carjack, or stab. And by the way, do you know what\u2019s up? Stabbings, because we\u2019re taking the guns away.\u201d<\/p>\n
City leaders have maintained that crime was already declining before the federal surge. Several residents challenged Pirro\u2019s assertions, with some wearing \u201cFree DC\u201d shirts and vocally opposing her remarks. One person was escorted from the room after a confrontation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like we\u2019re walking in two different cities,\u201d resident Athena Viscusi said. \u201cShe\u2019s seeing some city of lawless people that need to be yanked off the streets, and I see a city of people who are trying to go about their lives, take their kids to school, do their jobs and are being yanked off the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n
The extra federal resources have remained in the District even after the city\u2019s crime emergency expired. Despite the reported improvements, prosecutors have dismissed nearly a dozen surge-related cases, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n
The forum coincided with a new executive order from Trump restoring the federal death penalty nationwide and directing prosecutors to seek it in Washington for the most serious crimes.<\/p>\n
In an Oval Office signing, Trump said the order applies to \u201cespecially aggravated crimes,\u201d including homicides and the killing of police officers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you kill somebody, or if you kill a police officer, you should know what the punishment is,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
The order reverses a moratorium put in place by former President Joe Biden and directs Attorney General Pam Bondi and Pirro to pursue capital punishment \u201cto the maximum extent practicable\u201d in death-penalty-eligible cases.<\/p>\n
D.C. abolished capital punishment in 1981, but prosecutors may still seek the death penalty under federal law. The Justice Department is weighing whether to pursue capital punishment in the case of two Israeli Embassy staffers killed in Washington, though the presiding judge has urged caution, The Hill reported.<\/p>\n
Pirro said she chose to attend Thursday\u2019s forum after seeing how animated community members had become in response to the surge. Karen Gaal, the Citizens Advisory Council chairwoman, described the earlier meeting that prompted Pirro\u2019s appearance as \u201cpassionate.\u201d<\/p>\n
She defended the presence of masked agents, saying some cover their faces to avoid becoming targets. \u201cI\u2019m not here to argue that issue,\u201d she said. \u201cMy job is to protect. My job is to prosecute. My job is to support those guys, and if you would prefer that they not be here, then you\u2019re going to be dealing with the juveniles who are out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pirro also said she is working with Congress and Bowser on changes that would expand her office\u2019s ability to prosecute juveniles as adults. Currently, only charges such as murder, armed robbery, first-degree rape and burglary qualify.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
