No city, no matter how blue, can legally exempt itself from federal immigration law.

But that hasn’t stopped Democrats like Johnson from trying to turn their jurisdictions into sanctuaries for illegal immigration, even at the expense of public safety and the rule of law.

Johnson’s new “ICE-free zones” will be about as effective as Chicago’s infamous “gun-free zones,” which do nothing to stop violence and everything to empower criminals. One of those incidents was fatal as well.

“If this were a foreign army there would be F15 bombing runs in Chicago,” wrote one person on X. “Mostly peaceful weekend in Chicago,” added another.

Mayor Johnson’s war on law enforcement didn’t start with his “ICE-free zones.” This is just the latest chapter. Back in September, he called police a “sickness” and claimed they don’t make cities safer — an outrageous statement from the man tasked with leading one of the most crime-ridden cities in America.

He’s also made a habit of blaming everyone but himself for Chicago’s chaos. According to Johnson, it’s not his soft-on-crime policies or his refusal to support the police — it’s President Trump’s fault, or maybe Indiana’s, because of their gun laws. And in perhaps his most tone-deaf moment yet, he called it “unholy” to put criminals in jail. You can’t make this up.

During a press conference after almost 60 people were shot over the Labor Day weekend, Johnson said: “We need the federal government to stop the endless flow of guns into our state and into our city. Chicago police officers have taken more than 24,000 illegal guns off the streets of Chicago since I’ve taken office—over 24,000 illegal guns. They have worked hard every single day to make our city safer, and they’ve made historic progress.”

Isn’t it funny how law enforcement only becomes a “sickness” when it doesn’t serve the left’s political agenda? When Johnson wanted to push gun control, he couldn’t get enough of police data, press conferences, and photo ops with law enforcement officials.

But the moment the conversation shifts to actually enforcing the law — whether it’s cracking down on illegal guns or illegal immigration — suddenly, cops are the enemy.

And Johnson’s talking points are flat-out wrong. The latest data, from 2023 onward, shows that most guns used in Chicago crimes come from within Illinois itself, not from red states like Indiana that he loves to scapegoat.

It’s a convenient lie that lets him dodge responsibility while pretending he’s waging some noble crusade. The facts, as usual, tell a very different story.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has officially declared parts of the city “ICE-free zones” — in other words, federal immigration agents are no longer welcome.
