{"id":15683,"date":"2025-10-04T14:44:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T14:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=15683"},"modified":"2025-10-04T14:44:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T14:44:13","slug":"attempted-gop-scotus-assassin-faces-8-years-in-prison-after-planning-to-get-at-least-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=15683","title":{"rendered":"Attempted GOP SCOTUS Assassin Faces 8 Years in Prison After Planning to \u2018Get at Least One\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"post-51827\" class=\"hitmag-single post-51827 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-news\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Nicholas Roske, who pleaded guilty to attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh, was sentenced Friday to over eight years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Deborah Boardman, a Biden appointee, said it is important to send a message to people who are considering harming judges over disagreements with their decisions, especially now when threats are at an \u201call-time high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Roske\u2019s] actions before \u2026 self-reporting of this crime were extremely serious, were properly prosecuted, and a significant sentence of incarceration is necessary to promote respect for the law,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u201cPolitical violence, even unexecuted plans of political violence, must be prosecuted and punished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roske\u2019s 97-month sentence will be followed by a lifetime of supervised release.<\/p>\n<p>On June 8, 2022, Roske was arrested with burglary tools and a firearm outside Kavanaugh\u2019s Maryland home after placing a call to 911,\u00a0telling\u00a0the dispatcher he came from California to kill the justice and himself. A draft of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to reverse Roe v. Wade had leaked just a month prior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been portrayed as a monster and this tragic mistake that I made will follow me for the rest of my life,\u201d Roske told the judge, apologizing to Kavanaugh, to his family, and \u201cfor contributing to the fear judges experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government\u00a0asked\u00a0for a 30-year sentence to send \u201cthe unequivocal, clear, and strong message\u201d that attempted violence against the judiciary and public officials will not be tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant U.S. Attorney Coreen Mao told the judge Roske posed a \u201cvery real threat\u201d to the justice\u2019s life and \u201cto our constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mao argued Roske only changed his course of action because law enforcement was present at Kavanaugh\u2019s residence, highlighting how he spent a month acquiring supplies, conducting research, and discussing the impact of an assassination on the Supreme Court with friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Y]eah but i could get at least one, which would change the votes for decades to come,\u201d Roske\u00a0told\u00a0a friend in a May 2022 Discord message. \u201c[A]nd I am shooting for 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorneys highlighted that Roske did not go through with his actions. \u201cIt\u2019s not who she is,\u201d defense attorney Andrew Szekely said, referring to the defendant with female pronouns because he has declared himself to be transgender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes this case unique isn\u2019t that he [Kavanaugh] was a prominent political figure, but that she [Roske] stopped,\u201d Szekely said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudges aren\u2019t political,\u201d Boardman interjected.<\/p>\n<p>In a Sept. 19 filing, Roske\u2019s attorneys confirmed that he identifies as a woman, informing the judge they would \u201crefer to her as Sophie and use female pronouns\u201d moving forward.<\/p>\n<div id=\"in-article-related\" class=\"in-article-more inner-content\">\n<div class=\"in-article-more-label\">Related:<\/div>\n<div class=\"in-article-more-right\">Attempted GOP SCOTUS Assassin Faces 8 Years in Prison After Planning to \u2018Get at Least One\u2019<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the proceedings, Boardman also identified Roske using female pronouns. Other family members planned to attend but could not due to a medical emergency.<\/p>\n<p>His mother described Roske\u2019s long history of mental health issues, starting with a suicide attempt in 2015 and a seizure in 2016. During COVID-19, Roske\u2019s mother said he cut them out of his treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have listened more,\u201d the mother said. \u201cShe was frustrated with what was going on in the world, and we weren\u2019t really a safe place for her to process that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0letter\u00a0to the judge, Roske said he did not tell his parents about his gender identity at the time \u201cdue to their conservative views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roske\u2019s sister highlighted their close relationship as siblings and shared \u201cexperiences finding our identities in the LGBTQ community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of being met with treatment after this crisis, Sophie has been met with punishment,\u201d his sister said. \u201cShe made the right choice in a difficult moment, yet she is being penalized for it, which is not how I view justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"disclaimer\">\n<p><em>All content created by the Daily Caller News Foundation, an independent and nonpartisan newswire service, is available without charge to any legitimate news publisher that can provide a large audience.
