{"id":15376,"date":"2025-10-01T17:55:43","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T17:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=15376"},"modified":"2025-10-01T17:55:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T17:55:43","slug":"tim-walz-shredded-for-spending-430000-for-debate-prep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=15376","title":{"rendered":"Tim Walz Shredded For Spending $430,000 For \u2018Debate Prep\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Republican state lawmakers in Minnesota have sharply criticized Governor Tim Walz after it was revealed he spent $430,000 of taxpayer money preparing for a House congressional hearing\u00a0investigating\u00a0blue state governors\u2019 \u201csanctuary city\u201d policies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Invoices\u00a0obtained\u00a0by the Star Tribune show that Walz\u2019s office hired the prominent global law firm K&amp;L Gates to assist with preparations for his mid-June testimony before the GOP-controlled House Oversight Committee, which focused on questions about his and other blue state governors\u2019 sanctuary city policies.<\/p>\n<p>In May alone, Walz incurred approximately $232,000 in legal fees, with an average hourly rate of about $516, according to the invoices obtained by the Star Tribune.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The outlet further reported that K&amp;L Gates worked with Walz\u2019s office from April 10 through the June 12 hearing, with the legal preparation costing taxpayers a total of $430,000.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota Rep. Jim Nash, one of two Republicans on the state\u2019s Legislative Advisory Commission, questioned why Walz chose to hire outside counsel instead of relying on the state\u2019s attorneys and public relations experts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cA half a million dollars of taxpayer money to prepare the governor to go to his old stomping grounds seems exorbitant, particularly since the AG for the state of Minnesota was in Congress with Walz at the same time, and the two of them certainly could have figured out how to do what they were needing to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nash added that he intends to dig deeper into the invoices obtained by the Star Tribune.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Republican Minnesota state Rep. Harry Niska added there \u201cappears to be no legitimate legal interest in the state racking up nearly half-a-million dollars in what amounts to PR consulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTim Walz spent 12 years in Congress \u2014 he knows those hearing rooms inside and out, and he certainly knows how to conduct himself in that type of setting. So, why did the governor feel the need to spend $430,000 of taxpayer money on a private firm to \u2018prepare\u2019 for this hearing?\u201d Niska asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be clear, there appears to be no legitimate legal interest of the state in racking up nearly half a million dollars in what amounts to PR consulting as he tries to lay the groundwork for a presidential campaign that\u2019s going absolutely nowhere,\u201d Niska continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unconscionable to make hardworking Minnesota taxpayers pay for the governor\u2019s personal national political aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to criticism over Walz\u2019s decision to contract with K&amp;L Gates, the governor and his team avoided providing a direct explanation. Instead, they placed the blame on Republicans, accusing them of holding a hearing aimed solely at \u201cgrandstanding,\u201d according to the Star Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Teddy Tschann, a Walz spokesperson, characterized the hearing as a \u201cplanned political stunt on the taxpayer dime,\u201d the Star Tribune reported.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey were too busy performing for the cameras to even feign interest in hearing from Gov. Walz about Minnesota\u2019s balanced approach to immigration,\u201d Tschann added. \u201cWhat\u2019s most frustrating is that Tom Emmer and Pete Stauber planned this spectacle knowing what it would cost and went through with it anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked directly about the massive legal bill, Walz responded that the GOP-led hearing was \u201cnot where I wanted to spend money. It\u2019s not where I wanted to spend my time, and it certainly proved that there was nothing there other than using it as grandstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the sizable legal bill has drawn criticism for Walz this week, it\u2019s not the first time a governor or mayor has spent hundreds of thousands on legal advice.
