{"id":15298,"date":"2025-09-30T19:50:46","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T19:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=15298"},"modified":"2025-09-30T19:50:46","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T19:50:46","slug":"judge-delivers-first-big-decision-in-charlie-kirk-assassination-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=15298","title":{"rendered":"Judge Delivers First Big Decision in Charlie Kirk Assassination Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk, will face trial next month in proceedings that will be streamed nationwide, a judge ruled Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Robinson, who faces charges that could bring the death penalty, was arrested Sept. 11 after admitting to authorities that he killed Kirk, 31, during a student gathering in Utah. Investigators say Robinson targeted Kirk over his conservative political views and particularly his outspoken opposition to transgender ideology.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. 4th District Court Judge Tony Graf set the next hearing for Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. in Provo. Graf said the session would be conducted in person if Robinson\u2019s attorneys wish their client to be present, a point defense lawyer Kathryn Nester quickly confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>During Monday\u2019s proceedings, Utah County Chief District Attorney Chad Grunander said prosecutors have compiled what he called a \u201cvoluminous\u201d body of evidence against Robinson.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is a substantial amount of discovery in this case, Your Honor. It\u2019s voluminous, to say the least,\u201d Grunander told the court. \u201cAnd we\u2019re working on a process where we can exchange information as quickly as possible and be efficient in that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Court filings indicate that Robinson left a letter for his transgender partner and roommate in which he admitted to killing Kirk. In the letter, he claimed he acted to \u201cprotect\u201d the partner.<\/p>\n<p>Nester, Robinson\u2019s lead defense attorney, argued that the defense needed more time before any evidentiary hearing could be scheduled. A plea would also prevent Kirk\u2019s family from enduring weeks of testimony about the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Rice suggested that the defense may attempt to downplay the broader danger of the attack.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat the defense may be able to argue is to say, this was a single sniper bullet that had a single intended target \u2014 and therefore it posed no other danger to anyone else,\u201d Rice said. \u201cAnd if they can prove that to a jury or they can convince a jury of that, then they won\u2019t get the aggravating murder, and therefore they won\u2019t have the death penalty on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirk\u2019s killing has attracted widespread national attention, particularly because of his prominence as the founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA.
