President Donald Trump said the strike targeted the Tren de Aragua gang and killed 11 alleged traffickers, POLITICO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/06\/vance-drug-strike-venezuela-00548816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America. BEWARE!\u201d the president wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the recent strike in the southern Caribbean would not be a one-time operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got assets in the air, assets in the water, assets on ships, because this is a deadly serious mission for us, and it won\u2019t stop with just this strike,\u201d Hegseth said on Fox News on Wednesday. \u201cAnyone else trafficking in those waters who we know is a designated narco terrorist will face the same fate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During last year\u2019s campaign, Vance suggested using the U.S. military against the cartels, whose power and influence has only grown over the past decade as they flood the U.S. with deadly fentanly, much of it manufactured using Chinese-supplied ingredients.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The drug kills more than 100,000 Americans annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve got hundreds of thousands of very fine Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen, who are pretty pissed off at the Mexican cartels,\u201d Vance said at one rally. \u201cI think we\u2019ll send them in to do battle with the Mexican drug cartels, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strike was \u201cconducted against the operations of a designated terrorist organization and was taken in defense of vital U.S. national interests,\u201d said White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly, adding it was \u201cfully consistent\u201d with the law of armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Vance\u2019s remarks came a day after Trump signed an executive order rebranding the Pentagon as the \u201cDepartment of War,\u201d a change limited to informal use since a formal renaming would require congressional approval.<\/p>\n<p>Trump warned Friday that Venezuelan planes could be shot down if they put U.S. forces in what he called a \u201cdangerous position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warning came after the Pentagon said two Venezuelan fighter planes flew near a U.S. Navy destroyer operating in international waters this week. The incident occurred as the United States expands its military presence in the southern Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>The latest escalation follows a U.S. strike on a vessel tied to the Venezuelan-linked Tren de Aragua gang. The administration said 11 people were killed in that operation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Pentagon described the flight of the two planes as \u201chighly provocative\u201d and cautioned Caracas not to interfere with U.S. counter-narcotics and counterterrorism operations.<\/p>\n<p>Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office about the possibility of further encounters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I would say they\u2019re gonna be in trouble,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe heard that happened, but it wasn\u2019t really over, not like they described. But I would say general, if they do that, you have a choice of doing anything you want. OK?
