{"id":14883,"date":"2025-09-27T07:46:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T07:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=14883"},"modified":"2025-09-27T07:46:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T07:46:15","slug":"trump-admin-sues-boston-over-sanctuary-city-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cndailynews.store\/?p=14883","title":{"rendered":"Trump Admin Sues Boston Over Sanctuary City Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Trump administration has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Boston and its leaders, marking the latest move in its campaign to dismantle sanctuary city policies across the country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, NBC 10\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/wu-response-trump-administration-sues-boston-sanctuary-city-lawsuit\/3803207\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It targets the Boston Trust Act, a local ordinance that limits how the Boston Police Department interacts with federal immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Under the law, city police are instructed to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement only in matters that involve public safety.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>Police are directed not to participate in civil immigration enforcement, including detaining people at ICE\u2019s request unless there is a criminal warrant.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department argues the law violates the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which establishes that federal law takes precedence over conflicting state or local laws.<\/p>\n<p>In its complaint, the department alleged that Boston\u2019s sanctuary policies have resulted in the release of dangerous criminal aliens who should have been transferred to ICE custody.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Attorney General Pamela Bondi sharply criticized the city\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Boston and its Mayor have been among the worst sanctuary offenders in America \u2014 they explicitly enforce policies designed to undermine law enforcement and protect illegal aliens from justice,\u201d Bondi said. \u201cIf Boston won\u2019t protect its citizens from illegal alien crime, this Department of Justice will.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNot only are Boston\u2019s sanctuary city policies illegal under federal law, but, as alleged in the complaint, Boston\u2019s refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities results in the release of dangerous criminals from police custody who would otherwise be subject to removal, including illegal aliens convicted of aggravated assault, burglary, and drug and human trafficking, onto the streets,\u201d The Department of Justice press release\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/department-justice-sues-city-boston-mayor-michelle-wu-over-sanctuary-city-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn her first day in office, Attorney General Bondi\u00a0instructed\u00a0the Department\u2019s Civil Division to identify state and local laws, policies, and practices that facilitate violations of federal immigration laws or impede lawful federal immigration operations. On Aug. 5, Attorney General Bondi\u00a0published\u00a0a list of sanctuary jurisdictions, which included the City of Boston, and vowed to bring litigation to end these policies nationwide. Today\u2019s lawsuit is the latest in a series of lawsuits brought by the Civil Division targeting illegal sanctuary city policies across the country, including in New York, New Jersey, and Los Angeles, California,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who was named as a defendant alongside Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, defended the ordinance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our city and we will vigorously defend our laws and the constitutional rights of cities, which have been repeatedly upheld in courts across the country,\u201d Wu said. \u201cWe will not yield.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wu added that Boston remains \u201ca thriving community, the economic and cultural hub of New England, and the safest major city in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this administration is intent on attacking our community to advance their own authoritarian agenda,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Constitutional experts say the case faces steep challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is no case law, precedent, or anything to support the federal government forcing a state government to do federal duties,\u201d attorney Joseph Malouf told NBC10 Boston.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>There is no legal definition of a sanctuary city.
