Smith named Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore as his top choices to lead the Democratic ticket in 2028.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Speaking on his SiriusXM program Straight Shooter with Stephen A., Smith responded to a caller from Wisconsin, who described himself as a \u201clifetime lib\u201d and suggested California Gov. Gavin Newsom was the party\u2019s most likely candidate, though he added, \u201cI\u2019m not totally sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be. You shouldn\u2019t be,\u201d Smith said, interrupting. \u201cLet me tell you something right now: First of all, I\u2019ve got two candidates for you. They\u2019re two of my favorites. Now, I\u2019m not telling you to vote as I vote. I\u2019m just being honest and open with you about who are my two favorite candidates, OK?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love Gov. Josh Shapiro from Pennsylvania and Gov. Wes Moore from Maryland,\u201d he added, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5521971-stephen-a-smith-lists-democrats-2028-ticket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>. \u201cThose are my two and not necessarily in that order.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The issue at hand for Democrats is that many are starting to push for Wes Moore to run in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>However, Moore recently bowed out of 2028 contention and said he would run for re-election as governor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"as5808\" data-title=\"You Might Also Like\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During an appearance earlier this month on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Moore was asked by anchor Kristen Welker if he planned to throw his hat in the ring for the Democratic nomination. \u201cYeah, I\u2019m not running for president,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2028-election\/maryland-governor-wes-moore-ruling-out-presidential-run-redistricting-rcna229615\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed again on whether he was ruling out a presidential bid, he repeated that he was, pointing instead to his record as Maryland\u2019s governor and stressing his intention to seek a second term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur population is growing, Maryland is moving, and so I\u2019m really excited about going back in front of the people of my state and asking for another term,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<p>The governor also said on \u201cMeet the Press\u201d that \u201call options are on the table\u201d during the national redistricting fight, including redrawing Maryland\u2019s congressional districts, though the state\u2019s congressional delegation only has one Republican, Rep. Wes Moore is the real deal. Make no mistake about it, I doubt he\u2019ll run, but he is the real deal. When you talk about somebody that can walk and communicate \u2026 across the aisle and fixated on getting things done, Wes Moore is somebody that I would strongly, strongly advise you not to ignore,\u201d the sports commentator continued. \u201cYou better pay attention to this man.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div data-delay=\"4000\" data-block=\"12\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"e1c09a52-67a1-44a3-a58e-fc2bf67380c6\" class=\"_ap_apex_ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As for Newsom, Smith said he likes \u201cthe look\u201d him, noting the California governor dons blue suits well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe looks so presidential, right? And Gavin Newsom is smart, he\u2019s articulate, he\u2019s bright, he\u2019s very polished, and he could debate with the best of them,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>But then he added that Newsom has a dismal record as governor of the most populous state, including a dramatic increase in homelessness during his tenure, as well as the high taxes, regulation, and cost of living in California under strict Democratic rule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re going to point to a lot of different things that have ravaged that state,\u201d Smith told listeners. \u201cAnd they\u2019re going to look at businesses that have fled the state to go elsewhere because of the cost of living there, and I think ultimately that\u2019s going to hurt him in a general election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it really, really comes down to this,\u201d he added, per The Hill. \u201cGavin Newsom is a kind man whose heart is in the right place, and he just doesn\u2019t want to say no to everybody.
